How is water testing done?

The first step in drinking water testing is sample collecting. It’s best to obtain sampling supplies directly from the laboratory performing the analyses if possible. You can also contact our water testing experts and they will be happy to provide their resources and expertise.

Some Helpful Tips on Collecting Water Samples:

  • Remove any attachments on the faucet
  • Allow water to flow for 5 or 6 minutes before sampling
  • Do not rinse or overfill the container
  • Always collect cold water; never sample hot water
  • Do not touch the inside of the sample bottle or its cap

After a sample is collected our water testing experts will analyze the results either in-house or through our partnered National laboratory to help diagnose more extensive water problems. Our team of water experts at Virginia Environmental Resources is here to help you make informed choices about the water you drink.

How to test water quality

You may choose to have your water tested for a variety of reasons, such as using untreated well water, having problems with hard water, or being connected to a public water supply. It’s critical to understand your alternatives for water testing and the elements that you should be checking for. You can test your water at home with test strips, but it is important to note that they are not as accurate as laboratory water tests. It can also be difficult to decipher what test strip results mean for your family and how to move forward. Color Disk kits or drop test kits are another option for at-home water testing. However, these tests are a bit more involved and oftentimes take 2 or more days to read the results. You can also utilize portable digital devices to test your water. Compared to the first two test kinds, these are more expensive but get precise results. It is recommended to leave the instrument handling to the professionals because correct results depend on proper equipment calibration and training. How to test water hardness

A water hardness test will indicate how hard your water is by measuring how much calcium and magnesium are in a water sample. City water should be checked for hardness, pH, and chlorine at least annually. Using a sample you supply, an independent laboratory performs the most accurate test. There are less comprehensive at-home alternatives for testing water hardness, albeit these methods are also less accurate. For example: a Soapsuds test, or a DIY test kit. Once you’ve done a strip test and determined that your results are accurate by comparing them to a professional water test, you can take immediate action to protect your fixtures and appliances with water treatment systems. How to test for lead in water

Drinking water is a potential source of lead in homes. Since you cannot see, taste, or smell lead dissolved in water, professional lead testing is the only sure way of telling whether there are harmful quantities of lead in your drinking water. Solder, lead pipes, fixtures, and other plumbing components found in the home itself are the main causes of lead in tap water, along with the distribution system. If you are concerned about levels of lead in your water supply, contact Virginia Environmental solutions to schedule a FREE water test.

It’s critical to test your private well water to make sure it’s safe to drink and devoid of any toxins that could harm you or your pets. It is best to have well water especially tested for hardness, iron, and pH. Well owners are advised by the National Ground Water Association (NGWA) to test their water for bacteria, nitrates, and other contaminants that may be of local concern at least once a year. While a well owner can take samples with due care and instructions, in some cases, it is better to have a qualified person, such as a technician from the laboratory, do the sampling. It is easy to contaminate samples and sampling for some analyses such as volatile organics or methane has specific technical requirements. According to the Virginia Department of Health, “Well water should be tested by a state-certified lab”.  Sending your water to a certified water testing lab will provide the most comprehensive and accurate water analysis. Most home buyers would never consider purchasing a home without a thorough inspection of the structure and its operating systems. Buyers must take the same care to inspect the property’s well system and the quality of its drinking water. Many mortgage lending institutions, as well as some local governments, require inspections and tests before settlement. Disclosure laws and customary real estate practices may also govern well drinking water issues. Sellers can avoid delays at settlement by addressing water quality concerns before the house is placed on the market or comes under contract. Proof of a recent water test and well inspection reduces the chance of any surprises far along in the sales process.
